Description
A classic Salisbury steak recipe with creamy mushroom gravy, perfect for a comforting dinner.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape the beef mixture into 6 thick oval patties.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 2–3 minutes per side, until browned. They do not need to be fully cooked. Transfer the patties to a baking dish.
- In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add diced onion and sliced mushrooms. Cook for 5–6 minutes, stirring often, until softened and lightly browned.
- Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Sprinkle flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to coat.
- Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
- Stir in heavy cream, Dijon mustard, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until the gravy begins to thicken.
- Pour the creamy mushroom gravy over the beef patties in the baking dish.
- Bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy is bubbling.
- Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half or milk.
- You can use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
